The North Kansas City School District is preparing for a highly contested school board election this year, with five candidates filing to run for the two seats on the board to be elected on April 4th, 2023. The top two finishers will win.Incumbents Karee Gleason is facing off against four other challengers. The school board is made up of seven members who are elected to serve three-year terms. The board is responsible for setting policies, approving budgets, and overseeing the district's day-to-day operations.
Of the five candidates Josiah Bechthold and Luara Wagner are serious contenders having raised over $1500 each and have established finance committees and websites. Gleason on the other hand, despite being an incumbent is something of underdog. Gleason lacks a website and reporting raising less than $500 in her last finance report. The other two remaining candidates, Brian Mercer and Maren Stoflet do not appear to be serious contenders as they have not established finance committees or websites.
The election promises to be a competitive race as all the candidates bring unique experiences and perspectives to the table. The community will have the opportunity to meet and hear from the candidates at various forums and events leading up to the election.
