I recently came across a postcard from 1910, from France. It shows a group of athletes, wrestling and play-fighting on a frozen lake. They’re pretty ripped. They didn’t have gyms like we have them now. Nor did anyone hear of steroids, personal trainers… it was just raw strength.
I was particularly struck by the gentleman on the far right of the image. He has the sort of physique that would not look out of place in a bodybuilding competition or in a Hollywood or Bollywood film. Just ripped to the bones.
Even a hundred years ago, without any of the sophisticated training methods of today, without any chemical substances, supplements or special vitamins, men got swole and buff as hell. The natural way. The hard way. Can’t help but admire their dedication.
