"Smithville 2030 Plan Lacks Airport Redevelopment"

By Kristine Bunch

🚨I have asked before and no response, so of course I’m asking again. What Airport Redevelopment? What Airport? Is Smithville getting an Airport?
We had a landing 🛬 strip before at Douglas Farm. Chamber of Commerce recently helped rededicate their landing strip area that is now part of the Smithville Lake Area.
“Leverage off airport redevelopment”…. Maybe someone in the EDC Meeting will explain.
My problem with our local government is Citizens are really in the dark to all their plans. Yes, the 317+\- Comprehensive Plan for 2030 is all laid out which includes a Community Center and so many things, but which ideas in that plan are they choosing to spend our tax dollars 💸 So they can’t always tell us “it’s in the Comprehensive Plan” because they’re not following it 100%, they are picking and choosing the ideas “they” want and I can see the way they’re operating it’s going to bring our reserves so low they will continue selling City Land. I don’t see “Sell City Land” in our Comprehensive Plan!!!!!!! 🚨

To make matters worse, the lack of transparency has left many residents feeling frustrated and disconnected from the decisions that directly impact their lives. We deserve to know where our money is going and what the real plans are for our community.

It's high time for the local government to step up and start engaging with the citizens they serve. We need clear communication, regular updates, and genuine opportunities for public input. Without these, how can we trust that our best interests are being considered?

In the meantime, I urge everyone to attend the upcoming EDC meeting. Let's demand answers and hold our leaders accountable. If we stay silent, we risk losing control over the future of our beloved Smithville. Together, we can make sure that our voices are heard and that the community thrives for all of us.

While some of the things in this article may have merit, I find it very bias and unproductive to unifying our town. My husband and I feel Smithville to be one of the best in keeping their citizens informed of what they are doing and how they are spending our tax dollars. All you have to do is go to the City of Smithville webpage to view all the documentation. Yes, it takes time to read and sort through it. But it's out there for anyone that wants to. I get tired of individuals that don't want to invest the time to read through it accusing the City officials of doing things behind our backs. I challenge you to go to the website, and do your research. Go to the city aldermen meetings, and write letters to your city representative if you really want change.

I have and I’ve attended meetings for almost 3 years! Still don’t see the Airport Redevelopment. If you can find it, please let me know. Thank you.

The "airport redevelopment" has been mentioned a number of times in various city meetings. It has to do with the city leveraging the KCI Redevelopment in neighboring Platte County and potentially attracting smaller businesses that may be supporting larger ones in the KCI Redevelopment area. Example given was a small parts manufacturer that supplies parts to a large manufacturer located in the KCI Redevelopment area.
