Winter Blizzard Knocks Out Power in Gladstone

GLADSTONE, MO – A powerful winter blizzard swept through the Kansas City metro area overnight, leaving thousands of residents without power in Gladstone and surrounding areas. The storm brought heavy snowfall, strong winds, and dangerously low temperatures, causing widespread outages and hazardous road conditions.

Residents near 72nd and Troost reported losing power around 3:30 a.m., with restoration finally occurring around 11:00 a.m. The prolonged outage left many struggling to stay warm as temperatures plummeted. Reports indicate that additional neighborhoods throughout Gladstone, including portions of Antioch, Englewood, and North Oak, also experienced outages.

Evergy, the primary electricity provider in the region, attributed the outages to a combination of fallen tree limbs, ice accumulation on power lines, and high winds that damaged electrical infrastructure. Utility crews were deployed throughout the night, working to restore service as quickly as possible.

"We understand the frustration of our customers, especially in extreme cold," said an Evergy spokesperson. "Our crews are working as fast as conditions allow to restore power safely."

Many residents took to social media to express concerns about the prolonged outage. Some reported hearing transformers blow in the early hours, while others worried about keeping their homes warm as temperatures inside dropped.

City officials have urged residents to check on neighbors, particularly the elderly or those with medical needs, and to report any remaining outages to Evergy. Warming centers remain available at local community centers and libraries for those in need of heat and shelter.

As of noon, most outages in Gladstone appear to have been restored, though Evergy warns that additional scattered outages could occur as the storm continues to move through the region. Residents are advised to prepare for possible further disruptions and to avoid downed power lines.
