As a War Film, "Warfare" Gets It Right

"Warfare" is hands down the best war movie I have seen in the last five years and rates as 2nd on my all-time list of war movies right after Blackhawk Down. It is authentic down to the tiny details, probably because it was made by a former Navy SEAL based on his real-life experiences in Iraq. As a combat veteran myself, it was refreshing to see a war film that was completely absent of Hollywood theatrics, no swelling soundtrack, no badass quotable cheesy lines, the seals are played as quiet professionals doing a dirty job, taking over an Iraqi family's home to conduct a recon mission that goes wrong. The film does not shy away from showing soldiers as less than heroic, right down to their single-minded focus on saving only themselves and their wounded battle buddies in their own unit while showing no concern for their Iraqi Army counterparts and the unfortunate Iraqi family whose life is upended by the battle that converges on their home.

That being said, the lack of Hollywood theatrics may leave you feeling less than pumped up walking out of the theater. This is a war movie that is very focused on the human elements of war. It is worth a watch. Go see it on the big screen.
